His wife, Olivia, told the San Mateo Daily Journal that he died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012 after suffering a heart attack while receiving dialysis treatment. The San Francisco Chronicle reported he died in Redwood City. He was 67.

Brandon Jacobs is reiterating his desire to remain with the New York Giants in 2012, a sign the veteran running back knows a substantial pay cut will have to be made for him to stick.

Jacobs took a sizeable trim in 2011 to stick with the Giants and he’ll likely have to give up more this time around with his base pay set to be $4.4 million and a $500,000 roster bonus due next month. That total of $4.9 million is too much to pay a part-time back and Jacobs seems to understand as much.

In a perfect world, a Super Bowl winning team would stay the same personnel wise from year to year.

However, the salary cap, age, and free agency make keeping any NFL roster together virtually impossible. Therefore, the New York Giants, like every team, will have some decisions to make, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

"There will be a strong core of the players—our current players—coming back. I can tell you that," said general manager Jerry Reese. "But there will definitely be some changes."

The New York Post reports that Brandon Jacobs does not think his Giants career is over. Jacobs said on a radio interview Tuesday that he knows he wants to be back, and he believes that feeling is mutual. “I spoke with my agent, and I do expect to be fully back with the New York Giants next season,” Jacobs said. “These guys in the front office they’ve been doing this for years, they know what they gotta do. I want to be back, but they actually know what has to be done. ... If they don’t want me back then that’s another story, but I got a feeling that they do. Brandon Jacobs likely will need to restructure his contract to stay. If he leaves, the Giants likely will have to find a replacement to pair with Ahmad Bradshaw and his busted foot. That replacement could come from the current stable of backups, which comprises Da'rel Scott, D.J. Ware and Andre Brown. It could come from the bargain bin in the free agent market or in the middle-to-late rounds of the draft.
